Annual Daniel Varoujan Lecture at Ghent University

On May 17, Ghent University in Belgium hosted a lecture as part of the annual Daniel Varoujan Lecture Series, focusing on the persecution of cultural and intellectual figures during the Armenian Genocide.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by Prof. Dr. Peter Van Nuffelen, Professor of Cultural History of the Ancient World at the Department of History of Ghent University, and by Dr. Krikor Moskofian, Founder and Director of the Centre for Western Armenian Studies.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Uğur Ümit Üngör, Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University of Amsterdam, addressed the genocides that took place in the Ottoman Empire as well as in global historical contexts, highlighting the importance of preventing such crimes in the modern world order. The lecture was followed by a substantive discussion and Q&A session.

The event was attended by students and professors of Ghent University, representatives of the Armenian community, as well as diplomats from the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Belgium.

At the end of the event, diplomats from the Embassy of Armenia expressed their gratitude for the initiative and donated a collection of books on Armenian history and culture to the University library.
