Armenia’s 34th Independence Day was celebrated in Belgium

01 October, 2025

On October 1, a reception dedicated to the National Day of the Republic of Armenia took place in the ceremonial hall of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium (ARB).

The reception brought together high-ranking representatives of Belgium’s legislative and executive authorities, Members of the European Parliament, officials from the European Commission and the European External Action Service, ambassadors and diplomats of member states, Permanent Representatives to NATO, prominent cultural and artistic figures, as well as leaders of the Armenian community organizations in Belgium.

Ambassador Tigran Balayan delivered the opening remarks, in which he underlined that independence is the greatest achievement of the Armenian people-shaped through centuries of trials and sacrifices-and that it obliges us today to preserve and further strengthen it. He went on to recall that the Armenian people have never taken up arms for conquest, but always in defense of their homeland.

Referring to relations between Armenia and Europe, Ambassador Balayan stressed that independence today enables us to build a path of peace with dignity and sovereignty. He particularly highlighted the deepening of Armenia-EU relations, which in recent years have reached historic milestones.

The Ambassador also drew special attention to humanitarian issues, stressing the urgent need for the immediate repatriation of Armenian hostages held in Azerbaijani prisons.

In his remarks, Ambassador Tigran Balayan emphasized that preserving independence is the highest responsibility of our generation-a precious value that must be defended and never assumed as given.

Adding a unique touch to the festive atmosphere, the “Black Swan” quartet from the Netherlands performed traditional Armenian folk music. Guests enjoyed Armenian wines, teas, and brandies, along with exquisite sweets specially crafted by Armenian chef-pâtissier Robert Dadasyan, who had traveled from Armenia.
